Fashion Proportion Revealed

What is actually Proportion?

Proportion simply means that we compare the size (width, length) of parts of something (fashion or otherwise) to other parts of that thing so that we can draw it accurately to scale.

What about in FASHION?

It is extremely important that a Fashion designer should know about the Principles & Elements of Design. Proportion is one of them , it’s really IMPORTANT THAT  you can represent the body/figure for any collection of garments with a consistent proportion. You need to be able to reproduce all of the clothing sketches on THE SAME BODY with different proportions , for that group.

I love to draw designs on paper. Using the paper laid out with nine heads can make drawing easier, since the landmark length proportions are always there. Proportion is a tool helps us to draw what we see.

“The wisest and noblest teacher is nature itself,”         Leonardo da Vinci

Nature has also got a proportion which is known from the beginning.

Dan Brown, author of the bestselling book, The Da Vinci Code wrote, “When the ancients discovered Phi, they were certain they had stumbled across God’s building block for the world.”

What is Golden Mean?

The golden ratio (GR), also called the golden section, golden proportion, or mean (GR), is represented by the Greek letter phi and has the numerical value 1.6180339 or 0.6180339.

The Greek mathematician Euclid (300 B.C.) recorded in his book “Elements” that dividing a line at the 0.6180399 point is dividing a line in the extreme and mean ratio.

This universal “style guide” celebrated by artists, philosophers, scientists and mathematicians for millennia is really just a number: 1.6180339887, and is a part of your everyday life whether you realize it or not.

Where can we find this Golden Proportion?

For millions of years the Divine Proportion has been the universe’s own private secret for beauty. In nature everywhere it has helped to shape all that is…. From the spiral forms of the galaxies to the placement of the planets, to the spacing of the petals in a rose. Mother Nature is not the only one who used this seemingly magical yardstick for beauty.

Since the ancients “discovered” the Divine Proportion, we humans have used it to create masterpieces of our own, including The Parthenon, the Pyramids, the Mona Lisa, and the Eiffel Tower, just to name a few!

Now number of fashion designers are using this unique proportion in their designs.

Is there any simple way to understand Golden Ratio?

The Greek mathematician Euclid (300 B.C.) recorded in his book “Elements” that dividing a line at the 0.6180399 point is dividing a line in the extreme and mean ratio.

In simple words, the proportion is found by dividing a line into two parts so that the longer part divided by the smaller part is also equal to the whole length divided by the longer part.

This way of dividing a line or a shape is said to result in the most harmonious proportions. For millions of years the Divine Proportion has been the universe’s own private secret for beauty.

Is there any proof of Golden Ratio that I can analyse myself?

The Divine Proportion on the Human Body

One of the most astounding examples about the Divine Proportion, is that your entire     body   – right down to the size and spacing of your joints and the placement of your   bellybutton, are based on this fascinating formula

Even the features on your face are positioned according to the Divine Proportion, including the location of your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth.

Try it for yourself!

1) Measure distance between middle of your eye and bottom of your chin.
2) Divide this number by 1.618 (the Divine Proportion) and youʼll get… The bottom of your nose!

3) Measure width of your two front teeth (red line).

4) Divide this number by 1.618 (the Divine Proportion) and you’ll get…The height of your teeth!

5) Measure width of your mouth (green line).
6) Divide this number by 1.618 (the Divine Proportion) and youʼll get…The width of your nose!

You can find many more of these astonishing from your head to your toes! But don’t worry, you don’t have to have the “ideal” figure for this to work on you. The Fashion designers will simply make you look like you do!

The Divine Proportion in Fashion is the tool where budding fashion designers  hardly pay attention to……
